Win a Copy of Once-A-Month Cooking Family Favorites

cookbookcover
This giveaway is now closed. The winner is Kim, with comment #158!

This week we’re talking about once-a-month cooking — the what, the why, the how and more! To start, I have a copy of Once-A-Month Cooking Family Favorites to give away.

This incredible book from Mimi Wilson and Mary Beth Lagerborg is a follow-up to their original bestseller, Once-A-Month Cooking, which started the bulk cooking phenomenon.

Once-A-Month Cooking Family Favorites contains two one-month cooking cycles and five two-week cooking cycles (including gluten-free and gourmet versions!). Each cycle contains pantry and shopping lists, recipes for each meal and an assembly order to guide you through the process of putting the meals together in the simplest order.

The thing I love about the plans included in this book is the variety you get with each cycle. Although I froze six weeks worth of meals in preparation for the birth of our youngest daughter, we did it by simply making huge batches of our favorite meals. That means we have a lot less variety than we’d like. I’m not sure I could have pulled it off any other way (especially because we have some picky eaters in our house, and I can’t have dairy because my girls have all had dairy intolerances as nursing babies), but there are huge downsides to it as well, and I’m sure we’re going to be tired of those meals by the time our freezer is empty!

This book, on the other hand, includes a wide variety of recipes, including Zanzibar Chicken, Teriyaki Tuna Steaks and Pork Chops in Orange Sauce as well as family favorites like Spaghetti and Country-Style Ribs.

This week, I’ll be sharing tips and tricks for organizing a once-a-month cooking cycle as well as a written interview with the authors of Once-a-Month Cooking Family Favorites. One lucky Organizing Your Way reader will win a copy of the book to add to their cookbook collection!

Every reader has three methods available to enter this contest (for a total of up to three entries):

  1. I have thought of OAMC,but never tried it.I think I will soon:)

  2. I do the occasional double a batch and freze half, but I am really interested in once a month cooking. I love cooking for my family , but as a working mom of two, it is hard to find tome to cook in the evenings. Especially since my husband doesn’t come home before dinner time.

  5. Hi, I just joined the Once a Month Cooking group on Facebook. I’m so excited to see this. I love to do freezer cooking and need to expand my variety. The first time I ever did freezer cooking (many years ago), I used the original Once a Month Cooking book that I checked out from the library. I LOVED it! Having meals in the freezer makes life so much easier for what I call my “double life”–that of having a teenager and a preschooler at the same time. It gets crazy around here!

  6. I would love to try once a month cooking, but haven’t had a chance to yet. I am hoping I can have my DH wrangle our 3 kids and DH’s best friend can wrangle his kids and I can cook with his wife.

  42. I have done “Once-a month” cooking–especially in the summer. We live on a lake, have 2 boys and endless company. I must admit I have also used companies such as Dinner by Design and Dinner Helpers which is fun and convenient when I am too busy as I also work full-time outside of the home. It’s more expensive but worth it at times!

  57. I am new to once a month cooking. I’ve had one book on it for quite a while but have only recently made the jump. I was going to Super suppers and Dream dinners and paying the $$$ to fix their meals, then thought “I can do this at home and save $$$ and gas”..so that is what I am trying right now. While I have to do the cleanup and prep myself, I am hoping it will be just as good. I am on the lookout for recipes all the time. It really helps to have dinner ready to thaw and heat with our really busy family schedules.

  67. Wow! Cooking for a whole month sounds really impressive. I’ve never tried it but love the idea of it. I’m wondering how people handle this if all they have is a refrigerator/freezer with no extra freezer space. I guess I’ll just have to get the book and find out. Or maybe readers can offer some suggestions?

  68. I have never tried it myself but my neighbor did it every month (we moved) and I’ve always envied her for it. I’d love to try it and especially if I can make healthy meals instead of last minute unhealthy meals – I’d love it!

I do the cooking in our house. I have been interested in trying once a month cooking. Cooking is quite a challange sometimes with two working parents and a 16 month old.

  143. I am in a monthly cooking group with a group of friends. We each cook 2 meals for all who order those meals (google spreadsheet). So I’ll cook 7 of one meal, 7 of another, and end up with 10-14 meals. We try to stay as local/organic as possible, while still keeping a price limit on the meals. The girl’s nights to swap the meals are great fun too!

  146. I tried cooking for a month one, but the idea of it was far better than the reality! We were building a new house at the time, our current one was listed for sale and we had many showings, I had a six week old, as well as a 2 and 3 year old and just got in way over my head! I ended up tossing the ingredients during one memorable meltdown and telling my husband we’d have to just have to call for take-out. And we did! Now, that newborn is 3 years old, the house is built and we’re long settled. And I think [dare I say it] that it’s time to try again!

  186. I’ve wanted to try OAMC, but can’t afford the book. I hope I win!

  187. I have already subscribed to your feed. Love it!

  188. I joined the OAMC FB group!

  189. I’m intrigued by the idea since I work and go to school full time

  190. feed subscriber on google reader

  191. fan on facebook :)

  192. I do Once A Month Cooking all the time. It is the only way to maintain sanity with food allergies and the family’s busy schedules. I collect OAMC cookbooks but I don’t have this one yet. Thank you for hosting this giveaway.

  193. I am a new subscriber, looks like a great site!

  194. I am a twice a month cook. I love it. It is nice to not have the question, “what’s for dinner?” hanging over my head! :)

  195. I try and freeze extra meat, sauce, casserole-y things, but have never even thought to cook just once a month. that is a really neat idea and I need to look into this more! Thanks for posting this.

  196. Oh, and I recently subscribed too. :)

  197. I have never, ever tried to cook in bulk. The only way we get leftovers in our house is if it’s a huge pot of spaghetti or soup. Otherwise, we’re meal to meal. I really do want to learn to do cooking in advance like this, however! :)

  198. Me, again…I just subscribed to your feed!!! Looking forward to the great info and encouragement.

  199. Me, once more…I became a fan of Once a Month Cooking on Facebook. NEAT stuff!!! :) :)

  200. I’d love to win a copy of this book. I’ve been anxious to try the OAMC since I now have 2 children under the age of 2. I’ve also been pricing a deep freezer so that we have more room to store the meals.
    BTW…I love your blog! :)

  201. ooh. i already subscribe. i wanna try to do OAMC!!

  202. I did this successfully for one month before my second child was born, but have not been so successful since- would love some additional ideas and recipes- especially ones my kids will eat!

  203. Definitely would love to try once a month cooking. With three kids, it’s sounds like a sane thing to do.

  204. This is such a great strategy for moms on the go (who isn’t?!)who still wish to serve quality meals.

When I’m cooking freezer friendly foods,I almost subconsciously make enough to put one meal aside.Works like a charm!

  205. The idea is appealing to me but I have never tried it. I don’t freeze many prepared foods but do have the freezer space to make it work. I am intrigued :-)

  206. I do subscribe to your blog through my google reader… does that count? Thanks for the giveaway!

  207. This book sounds like a good starting point, I love the fact that it has cycles. I purchase a book some time ago, but it wasn’t set up in a helpful way, it discouraged me! Would love to give this a try!

  208. I would love to win this book, I have heard so much about it!!

  209. I love OAMC! I have the original book and the reprint – can’t wait to see the new one!

  210. I used to cook for a week at a time, but never a month. I really like the idea, just never took the time.

  217. I’ve done once-a-month cooking before through one of these stores that you go to and they supply the ingredients and you assemble… But I’d love to do it at home, but always find it daunting… :)

  220. I have tried OAMC when the kids were smaller. Now that they are busy teens I think I should try it again. I would love a book to kick start my efforts.
