Question of the Day: How Often Do Your Reorganize?

Last week, I was straining to reach some books on a higher shelf in one of our kitchen garage cabinets when I realized that stretching to reach those books several times a week frustrates me. It’s not a huge frustration or anything, just a nagging feeling whenever I know I need to get to one of them.

I spent a few minutes looking at everything in the cabinet and coming up with an idea to reorganize it so that it would be less frustrating, and the next day I moved the shelves around to make the things I use more often more accessible. Since then, getting to the books has become much less of a chore.

I often reorganize things when I realize they’re not quite working for us anymore, and today’s question of the day is:

Do you reorganize often as you go about your daily life, or do you wait until a designated “spring clean” to change things around?

Is there anything you can think of right now that’s been bugging you that you could reorganize to make less frustrating?

What is the biggest thing that keeps you from reorganizing?

What area of your home do you find yourself reorganizing most often?

Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!

Hi. My name is Mandi and I’m an organizing junkie. I’m also a wife, and Momma to four little girls (5, 3.5, 2 and a new baby!). I've worked at home since our oldest was a baby, and like a lot of other moms, my life is a constant balancing act of caring for my family and my home, meeting my obligations and finding time for hobbies in there somewhere. Oh, yeah, in the interest of full disclosure, I’m somewhat of a kitchen dunce and I only like to pretend that I’m crafty. Read more here!

  1. I am always reorganizing! The thing I reorganize the most which is probably true with a lot of moms is toys! Secondly, closets. Our kids are always growing and changing as well as their needs and wants so I am just trying to keep up with them. :)

  2. I feel like I am reorganizing on a need-to basis. Often that happens with the change of seasons. Sometimes I go through spurts of organizing every thing I see, every chance I get!

  3. I would say; closets (growing girls), scrapbooking/crafting (got my own space, Yeah), laundry room and guest room (these rooms are my catch all rooms – I need to stop that! : )) These days I have to wait until a chunk of time gets freed up so I can concentrate on reorganizing. Especially, since I tend to go through everything. And since we are on summer vacation here and the babysitters are too (Yeah!). I have one come over for a good part of the day once a week and I can get to it and not have to worry about entertaining my girls. They have fun and so do I! Then when the day is done, my poor husband will come home to a crazy lady waiting to show him how I have reorganized yet again! : ) I find things after awhile need re-tooling and my mindset changes too. Like I hate to throw out anything that could be useful. Well, that was leading to a bad place. Now I am selective about buying products with less packaging and more ruthless with myself on what I keep. I LOVE to re-organize which for me involves purging. It makes my happy and energized!

I think this is a great point, Barbi! I often purge as I’m reorganizing as well. It makes me more aware of what I’m buying because I know that even though we try to be careful with our purchases, there are still things I get rid of every single time I go through a room!

  4. it has turned out to be about 3 months. Mostly because of a growing toddler’s clothes but also as I need to around the house, every part.

  5. Hi Mandi

I reorganise as often as I get irritated by something :)

Here’s something I wrote about it

  6. All the time!! Just for fun, when I’m sad, when I’m happy, when I’m glad. Inside, outside, upside down. If I haven’t organized something in a day, it’s not been a good day :)

    I need my daily fix!!!

  8. You know, I think it goes by “that-time of the month”. I get into this “nesting-phase” when I have a ton of energy and every ounce of clutter makes me feel crazy. That is when I like to clean it out, throw it away, scrub it, and replace half the stuff I took out. And then there are times like now, when I have a head cold that mountains of clutter don’t phase me. Great post Mandi, Abbie

  9. I’m always thinking about organizing, but it often takes me awhile to get around to it. I think I organize toys the most, and kid clothes, and then random other things. Right now I’m thinking about how best to organize my catch-all closet. The two biggest hold-ups for me are money and time. I don’t have much of either, so my organizing often involves re-purposing things that are no longer necessary. It would be awesome! to have lots of extra cash for cool organizational items. My last big project was converting an underused changing table into a toy shelf.

  10. Like you, I re-organize when I notice the current system is no longer working or getting overloaded. The toys and my kitchen junk drawer get re-organized the most. They both get lots of use!

  12. I feel like I am constantly trying to make things easier.. I am a single mom of 4 children and it seems like the closets are a big thing for me. Sometimes I think clothes multiply.. UGH and everyone grows out and then what to keep for the next ones! Struggle!!

Another thing is Meds.. what do other people use to keep this organized?

I love reading your thoughts and use so many ideas!!

  13. I reorganize when I cannot stand the disorganization anymore! I just reorganized my laundry and office this week, because they were collecting a lot of things that did not have a place. I always take everything out of the area and start over. I end up throwing a lot out and finding new places for other things.

  14. Everytime I move, which lately has been every few months… UNFORTUNATELY!! I read your blog ALL THE TIME and always close my computer thinking “oh, that’s a great idea… I’m gonna do that today!” Of course, to no avail:( I need that book, though. Idiot’s guide to organizing… that’s got my name written all over it!

Moving every few months??? What a hassle! We’ve moved quite a bit since we got married (5 times in 6 years, although now we plan to stay put for good), and it’s a lot of work!!!

That said, I do think it can be good for decluttering/organizing because I always end up purging really well when we move rather than hauling it all with me!

  15. I like to organize when my hubby is gone on long courses. I don’t know why but it’s better than drowning my sorrows in a tub of ice cream.

Since he’s going to Afghanistan in April, I have a six month plan to organize, get rid of things we don’t use anymore and find some much needed space!

First, I just wanted to thank you, Vanessa – and your husband – for your sacrifice for our country!!

I think this sounds like a great way to use what must be a very hard time for something productive!

  16. I reorganise things when I can’t stand the clutter anymore, but what I should be doing is getting rid of stuff. My GF made a plaintive cry this weekend of ‘please stop moving things around’ and I realised that I’m being unfair to her if I expect her to know where everything goes even after I’ve moved it all around. So now I am focussing on decluttering rather than reorganising….and leaving post-it notes for her if I do move things!
