Question of the Day: How Do You Prepare for Illness?
I hope you’ll excuse that I’m rearranging the schedule this week and doing the question of the day on Monday, but as I rapidly approach my due date, we’re also battling the stomach flu at our house (it’s going to be funny one day, right?), and besides the fact that I’m not sure I have the energy to write a coherent, useful post today, it also has me thinking more about stocking up for illnesses, especially as we head into cold and flu season.
What do you do to prepare for illness striking your household?
Do you stock up on medicines? Electrolyte-drinks? Food?
What are the most important supplies you always keep on hand?
What do you always forget and have to run out and buy at the last minute?
Are you doing anything differently this year with the predictions of the H1N1 virus sweeping the country?
I need to get to work on our stockpile (although I did, thankfully, have Pedialyte stocked in my pantry), and I’m really interested to hear what’s in yours!

I keep standard medicines on hand. I also like to keep powdered Pedialyte in the pantry (but it’s hard to find…) But the BIGGEST thing I do is keep the bathrooms clean. Sounds silly, but since the stomach bug usually strikes in the middle of the night, I like knowing that my kids can sit on the clean floor next to the clean toilet at a moment’s notice!
And, I keep meaning to research the H1N1 virus and the suggestions for preventing & treating it… Better get to it, fall is upon us!

From all I’ve gleaned over the months, the suggestions are the same as normal flu, as it is just another flu virus (in terms of spreading in such, I mean.) So washing hands frequently, washing doorknobs and stuff, watching out when around sick people, the usual.
As for treating it, it’s also the same as a normal flu, however, they do advice you go see your doctor if you develop any flu-like symptoms, just to rule out H1N1. If it is H1N1, they might suggest you treat it with an antiviral, but you do need to take those in the first 48 hours for them to work. Some say that might not even be necessary – guess that’s a personal call between you and your doctor!

Our friends hate us because we don’t get sick. Seriously. My kids (8 and 4) have had one or two ear infections each and I don’t think they’ve ever had the stomach flu. I remember getting the flu once since I’ve had kids. In the 18 years I’ve known my husband, he has taken 1 sick day. With that said…I keep the bathrooms and doorknobs clean. We stock up on herbal tea and tea tree oil (great for ear drops if we feel an earache coming on). My husband doesn’t allow us to even use the words for sick or illness. We pray and speak against it.

Oh Mandi, I am so relating to you right now. We just got over the stomach bug in our house and it so wasn’t pretty. I hope you all feel better soon. The only thing I was missing in our house is adult pepto bismal and my girlfriend ran out and got that for me. The other thing I suggest stocking up on is white freezies…that way if someone misses the toilet it doesn’t leave a stain!

Keeping saltines, soup, and a 7-Up type drink are necessities for sickness planning in my household.
