Simplify: 7 Guiding Principles to Help Anyone Declutter Their Home and Life

Win a Copy of Jamie Martin’s Steady Days!

Steady Days: A Journey Toward Intentional, Professional MotherhoodWhen Jamie Martin, who blogs at Steady Mom, asked me if I would be willing to review her new book, Steady Days: A Journey Toward Intentional, Professional Motherhood, I was excited by the tie-in with today’s post in my series on resolutions, become a more intentional parent.

Steady Days is a small book that holds a wealth of information. I keep very few books to reread, but I’ve dog-eared pages throughout this book and plan to keep it as a reference for years to come. Written in 40 short, easily digestible chapters, it offers key principles to help you approach motherhood as a profession along with practical tools to put those principles into practice.

I enjoyed each of the four sections within Steady Days and appreciate how Jamie tied them together into the overarching goal of becoming an intentional, professional mother:

:: Getting Organized, including tips for creating a routine and developing a home planner

:: Retaining Enthusiasm, with encouragement to count our blessings and meditate on things that will help us be enthusiastic as parents

:: Learning Together, with a great reminder about the different between phases and habits as well as practical ideas for learning together

:: Making Memories, including ways to make and capture memories together

This week, one lucky Organizing Your Way reader will win a signed copy of Steady Days!

+++++++++++++++

Every reader has four methods available to enter this contest (for a total of up to four entries):

1. Leave a comment. Which section of Steady Days most appeals to you — getting organized, retaining enthusiasm, learning together or making memories? How do you approach these areas already?

Mandi Ehman

Hi. My name is Mandi and I’m an organizing junkie. I’m also a wife, and Momma to four little girls (5.5, 4, 2.5 and a baby!). I've worked at home since our oldest was a baby, and like a lot of other moms, my life is a constant balancing act of caring for my family and my home, meeting my obligations and finding time for hobbies in there somewhere. Oh, yeah, in the interest of full disclosure, I’m somewhat of a kitchen dunce and I only like to pretend that I’m crafty. Read more here!

  4. Retaining enthusiasm. With three kids all 5 and under, I’m just often so tired that I can’t be enthusiastic. I need help!

  5. I subscribe to your RSS!!

  6. The section that appeals to me the most is the section on getting organzied along with learning together. I want to make life in our house fun, but a place where learning also happens with that fun.

  7. The section that most appeals to me is learning together. My daughter is almost three and my son is 1.5 and since he came along our activities often are brought down to his level so my daughter is left wondering when the fun will start!

  8. Getting organized is my struggle. Trying to purge stuff now but have a long way to go. Would love to see what she has to say about organization.

  10. Making Memories appeals most to me. I take lots of pictures and scrapbook, but looking for other creative ways to make memories that allows my son to also have a hands-on approach! Looks like a great book!

  11. Making memories, always looking for new ideas!

  12. I subscribed to the Steady Mom’s blog!

  13. I think Making Memories is a big struggle with me because I tend to hyper-focus on other aspects of motherhood. I need to get back to the business of playing with the kids and making sure they have great memories to cherish, rather than being so focused on the business of running the household.

  14. I already subscribe to your blog:)

  15. I have to say Learning Together appeals most to me. My son will be starting home school soon and I want to make sure my teaching is effective. Thanks!

  23. The empty nest syndrome is looming nearer and nearer and as I look back on my own childhood, I know how important memories of your childhood are – sometimes the memories of the teenage years have the greatest impact on how we view ourselves as an adult, so I would have to say “Making Memories” is what appeals to me.

  24. WOW!!! I was just thinking about this very subject this morning. What motivates me? What are my priorities? Then I read my blog reader and there is this post. So the part in the book, Steady Mom about what are my motivations really jumped right out at me.

  61. Gosh….I think I am excited about all of the topics of the book. All are areas that I need encouragement and to work on. I guess to start out, the Getting Organized section would be most useful. My house is in total disorder right now. It has gotten worse and worse over the last few years. My goal this year is to get rid of things and to organize the things that I am going to keep. So far, I have gotten containers for office supplies and have labeled them. Next, I will tackle my kitchen. Lots of work, but very worth it!!

  62. I think the “memories” section appeals to me right now; I feel like I’m pretty intentional in my mothering of our 4 kids, but life is often so crazy that I don’t know if we’re capturing the memories.
