Win a FreeAgent Go 500GB External Hard Drive!

This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Mihla, with comment #18, the winner of the FreeAgent Go!
This week, as part of our Weekly Hot Spot, we’re going to be talking about organizing your computer files. To launch the series, I am so excited to tell you about the Seagate FreeAgent Go External Hard Drive.
Whether you’re looking for a backup solution for your pictures, documents and other important files or for easy portability that gives you access to your files no matter where you are, the FreeAgent Go is an amazing storage solution starting at just $100 for 500GB of storage!
I really cannot get over how far technology has come since I had my first Tandy desktop computer — running on a DOS platform — almost 20 years ago. The fact that this tiny, lightweight gadget can hold 500GB worth of data blows my mind! And it’s so stinkin’ cute too, in your choice of 10 sleek colors!
Although I’ve been looking at external hard drives for over a year now (how’s that for procrastination?) to backup the hundreds of pictures I take every month of my girls, the usability of this hard drive really goes far beyond that. I now work on two computers — my main laptop and an Acer netbook — and having an external hard drive that is this portable and convenient to use allows me to quickly and easily switch between the two depending on whether I’m working in my office (i.e., the corner of the couch), on the front porch or on the road.
It means that instead of having different versions of various documents on both computers, I can keep my files organized and simplified through the easy sync feature, which comes as part of the pre-installed Seagate Manager software.
I also discovered — although I haven’t yet tried it — that I can purchase additional software from Creedo for just $30 that will allow me to actually run programs from the hard drive itself, which will be incredibly useful for the Acer especially, since netbooks can get quickly bogged down with too much software installed.
One lucky Organizing Your Way winner will win a Seagate FreeAgent Go 500GB External Hard Drive with the following features:
:: PC-compatible
:: 5400 RPM spin speed
:: USB 2.0, up to 480 Mb/s
:: 3.1″ x 5.1″, 5.6 ounces
:: FreeAgent Go Dock docking station
:: Automatic backups and encryption
:: Five-year warranty
Every reader has five methods available to enter this contest (for a total of up to five entries):
1. Leave a comment. Tell me about your computer files. Are the organized? Do you have a system in place for purging them? Do you back them up?

Hi, I would love a external hard drive because I lost all my information on my laptop in May because it crashed. Please put me in the drawing.
This is my second entry because I am already subscribed to Organizing Your Way. It was because of RSS feed that I heard about this great giveaway.
I’m just organized about my school papers. Everything else is just thrown around!

After a computer crash in which my techno son was able to recover my photos and music onto his external hard drive, I’ve been looking at buying one myself. I’m horrible at purging. This would be a blessing.
I’m a subscriber to your email updates.
I have a external hard drive which just died on me – uggg. Fortunately, I also back up using Mozy and I had everything on DVDs. But, I’m in the market for a new EHD
So, your blog post was timely for me!!!

Oohhhhh my computer files sure could use some help! I have so many old files from school, picture files, and all kinds of old job-search documents. Help!!
bashtree´s last blog ..a little marriage advice
File structure…well, for this, I’d use it primarily for my photo and document storage. While I try to backup every few months to DVD, can’t say that its always perfect…or remembered.
The size comparison to the soda can is just amazing.
On our family computer I organize our files by family member. Specially my kids school work, that way is easier to delete when school year is over and free some space.
Currently I backup to an online service and DVDs, but I have so many files I’ve run out of space on my internal drives on both my laptop and desktop Macs. I need to have immediate access to these files, so a large external drive is the best solution. The Seagate FreeAgent Go would be the perfect choice.

I’m not the best at organization on a daily basis – but when I get down to it (usually on the weekends) I get the job done. As for computer files – I go through my pictures file about once a month and separate them all into specific folders to clean them up. My husbands computer just crashed, too – so we need to transfer all his old picture files onto my computer. Thanks for the contest!

Wow! Never even knew it existed! I like the idea about using it to run extra software for laptops!
I have only a few files that I would be crushed if I lost, our financial stuff and my pictures. I got sick of the endless picture CD’s last year and purchased an external hard drive to keep them all on. I back my checking account up at least once a week to a flash drive. Works for me!

I am terrible about backing up my files. I back them up online when they’re really important, but then I’m paranoid that they will be lost. You’d think I would be better about it because I have had a computer stolen and lost most of my kids baby pictures.

i do have my files organized somewhat; i mainly use folders for specific categories and organize that way. I would love to have an EHD as right now i back-up my files to DVD’s put that is a long process each month as i am a digital scrapper and have tons of files for that not too mention my pictures. and it is a pain then to go back and find/use something i have pulled off the computer.

I let hubby organize our pics and back them up. I am more into having the hard copies!
I am trying to get better organized. I use a 500 GB external hard drive and a 200 GB external hard drive – one for backup and one for work files, exclusively. I swap files back and forth when, for example, I have a to do a complete reformat and reinstall (I had this happen this week. UGH.) I really love external hard drives, so I would like to be entered in your drawing – I already subscribe via RSS.
One can never have enough hard drive space. Ever. And I used a Tandy TRS-80 in my very first job! (TRS-DOS anyone?)

Laughing here, and squealing with glee! 1. I’d love to win the external drive; 2. I’ve been on a mission to purge & organize my computer files for the past several weeks. I’m embarrassed to admit this, but I’ve got 3 active computers that need decluttering & organization! It is sooooo frustrating to go to look for a file and have to search 3 places!!! Isn’t that ridiculous? I have a theory – if you have to look for something in more than 2 locations, it’s time to get organized!!!
So, it’s been a quest for me of late (should have started sooner!) to get that going. This is PERFECT timing, so pick me, pick me!!!
I have a TON of photos and files that I desperately need to back up – and I don’t want something that takes up a bunch of desk space! Thank you!
I am completely unorganized! I have 10,000 pics in my pic file that are not only NOT backed up but are on a computer that is dying by the minute!
I am very unorganized with my files and don’t back them up. I so need this item!!

My computer files are organized by topic and even date depending on what they’re for. I do have a system in place to purge, although I’m not always the best at it. What I find works best is if I make sure I put temporary things on the desktop. I hate having anything on the desktop, so I know I am guaranteed to delete it the minute I don’t need it anymore. For things I need to wait on temporarily, I have a desktop folder for holding them. Finally, if it’s something that isn’t going away anytime soon, it actually gets a home somewhere else.

I think I’m pretty organized about how I file things on my computer, but I could be far better at purging things I don’t need. I have an alert set up to remind me if I fail to do a backup every 30 days and I try, before I do my backup, to purge at least one file and to get rid of as many e-mails as I can from the previous month (but I’m not always 100% successful).
